Portable appliance testing explained

Portable appliance testing is an important check for businesses to comply completely with The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, together with other health and safety regulations. It should be conducted regularly and is a specialised means of testing all portable, electrical appliances to ensure they are safe for staff, suppliers and customers to use on a day to day basis.

Portable electrical appliances are deemed to be any piece of electrical equipment that are connected to the mains through a plug and is also typically within the 40 – 415 volt range.

Why is portable appliance testing important?

During every day use appliances can become worn or damaged and therefore unsafe to use. When we assess an appliance we have to consider the potential effect on the members of the public and staff if the appliance we to cause harm or injury.

What does portable appliance testing involve?

The first step is to carry out a visual inspection of all the portable appliances in the office to establish any immediate issues such as loose wiring or damage. We then proceed with detailed electrical testing on an item by item basis. Items will then be either passed safe or where there is a faulty and it is possible to do so this will be repaired and placed back in service fully working and above all safe.

Every test is recorded in detail and a pass certificate issued. Each piece of electrical equipment is given an individual number (or we can use your asset number) and is identified with a unique system of coloured PAT testing labels, to provide customers with a simple and effective way of checking their appliance testing is up to date and indicating whether the item has passed or failed.

Over the years, we have worked with Housing Associations, Manufacturers, Schools, Colleges, Law Firms, Games Developers, Retail and many more. We are constantly adding new customers to our PAT testing database every day and our proud of the ‘word of mouth’ recommendations we regularly receive.
